The Fernery Lodge & Chalets
The magnificent Fernery Lodge is perched above a 30 meter waterfall in the Sanddrift River gorge, with stunning views of the river mouth, Indian Ocean and Tsitsikamma Mountains. It offers guests breathtaking views, beautifully appointed living areas, and 7 superbly furnished luxury suites which are tastefully and individually decorated. Every effort has been made to ensure our guests’ comfort, from crisp percale linen and large luxurious bathrooms to underfloor heating and satellite television. Other features include heated towel rails, tea and coffee making facilities, a bar fridge stocked on request, digital safes, hair-dryers and cosy bath robes. Open fire places in the lounge and dining room, a jacuzzi, sauna and swimming pool, are but some of the features that make the Lodge a really special destination.
Nestled among the fynbos overlooking the river, the charming Fernery chalets are beautifully furnished and equipped, offering guests the perfect country retreat. Spacious and secluded, each chalet has an en suite bathroom with both bath and shower, and we have aspired to provide everything for your comfort from crisp percale linen and mohair blankets, to a bar fridge stocked on request, tea and coffee facilities and a barbeque with wood and charcoal. Enjoy the tranquillity and beauty of river pools, bird life, mountains and plantations from the privacy of the sheltered deck, or curl up in front of a cosy log fire indoors. Each chalet has satellite television and Chalet guests have access to all of the Lodge facilities including the restaurant and cocktail bar.
Whether you're an energetic morning jogger, bird watcher, mountain biker or simply want to lounge around the pool there is something for everyone at the Fernery. Activities on the Estate include swimming, jacuzzi and sauna as well as walking and jogging routes. There are also several beautifully appointed decks that offer tranquil settings for sundowners or a delicious picnic that can be ordered from the kitchen. They also offer excellent birding opportunities and our bird list for farm sightings now numbers over 165 birds. Mountain bikes are available for rental and there are a number of cycling routes through the plantations, and rowing boats on the dam offer good opportunity for fishing with fishing rods and lures available from the reservation office.
At the end of a tough day relaxing, guests are encouraged to sit back and soak up the view while enjoying a fernery cocktail or glass of wine before making their way to the beautiful dining room for excellent cuisine and an enjoyable atmosphere.
Dear Valued Guests
Since opening our doors to you in 2001, The Fernery Lodge & Chalets has been committed to ensuring the very best service and experience. Your well-being has always been our first concern and we will not compromise on this in the face of the Novel Coronavirus crisis.
With the President’s announcement of the nation’s state of disaster, the Fernery has put into action stringent practices and key measures to ensure the protection of our guests, our staff and our company.
In an effort to minimise the threat and risk of the virus spreading, we are adhering to the guidelines of the CDC and WHO on health and safety measures. This entails:
- upholding the highest standard of cleanliness and hygiene throughout our lodge, chalets, spa, staff quarters and entire property, with extra attention being paid to the sterilization of high-risk areas such as door handles, appliances, equipment, work surfaces, public bathrooms, all service and common areas
- intensified waste management and sanitation practices
- a back-up stock of disinfectants and sanitizing products to sustain us during the crisis period
- offering all the necessary support to our staff by means of awareness and required preventative measures
- constant sharing of information and updates to safeguard our staff, colleagues and guests, enabling the Fernery to remain a calm, peaceful and stress-free environment
As this is an unprecedented situation being faced globally, unfortunately we do not have all the answers but we are committed to handling each query individually and on its merit. Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions and we will undertake to respond to each one as effectively as possible.
We will continue to be the guest-centered establishment that has endeared us to our guests and our passion remains steadfast.
We offer our sincerest thoughts and support to all who are likewise facing this crisis.

GPS : 34° 1' 12.72" S / 23° 53' 46.32" E
The Fernery is situated on the Garden Route, in the Tsitsikamma, mid-way between Plettenberg Bay & Jeffreys Bay and approximately 160km from both the Port Elizabeth & George airports.
(a) When travelling west on the N2 from Port Elizabeth & Jeffreys Bay, continue for 4km after passing Tsitsikamma Falls Adventures and crossing the Kruis River Bridge, and turn left onto the Blueliliesbush & Nompumelelo road.
(b) When travelling east on the N2 from George & Plettenberg Bay, continue for 4km after crossing the Storms River Bridge and turn right onto the Blueliliesbush & Nompumelelo road.
Continue south on the Blueliliesbush road for 2km, passing Nompumelelo Village on the right, to a T-junction.
Turn right at the T-junction & then left after 50 metres & then right again after a further 50 meters; as per The Fernery and Forest Ferns signs. From here it is 6km on a well sign-posted gravel road to The Fernery Lodge & Chalets.
Please note: This road is an MTO forestry road and we are dependent on their maintenance teams for its upkeep. Please drive carefully.
Once you reach the Forest Ferns Estate, please follow the reception signs to the parking area. Do not be misled by the industrial appearance of what is a working foliage export company, directly opposite the Fernery... beyond the entrance you will find luxurious accommodation, fine dining & pure relaxation. Welcome to the magical, mystical Fernery!
